To all our Members,
Many of you may have been following the recent events, regarding Turkish incursions into the Greek EEZ and the heightened tensions in this region. Whilst we are currently far from our beloved Rhodes, I know many of you have a very keen interest in current events and how this may affect Rhodes and Greece in general. Thankfully, current incidents have not escalated further, but we can all agree the aggressive posturing from Turkey may trigger a very dangerous incident.
Many of you would know that Turkish aggression and hostilities are not new, however, the current issues have a heightened concern from many countries in the region and around the world. Whilst living such a long way from Rhodes, many of you may feel frustrated that you cannot express your support.
However, Rhodians and Greek Expats in Australia can have an impact, by simply engaging our government to voice objection to Turkey, both locally and on the international stage at the United Nations. The Dodecanesian Federation of Australia (DFA) has asked the Rhodes Club of Melbourne to write to our local Federal Member of Parliament and ask them to condemn Turkish behaviour, express their support for the UN Maritime law and voice recognition of Greece’s entitlement to EEZ within the parameters of UN Maritime Law.
Australia is a signatory to the UN Maritime law and is a big advocate for this law. Allowing a state such as Turkey to disregard, unilaterally act or refuse to recognise UN Maritime Law, would set a very dangerous precedent, allowing rouge states around the world to follow.
The Rhodes Club of Melbourne will be supporting this initiative, and we ask similar clubs or association members, from similar clubs in other states around Australia, to in-box us for further details if you wish to support this initiative.
